#TN035
#Summary
Version 3.7x and Windows 98
Windows, charts etc behave incorrectly, and problem gets more severe as the
program is used due to resource depletion
Note: Versions lower than 3.7 are not effected nor are Windows 95, NT4,ME, 2000 or XP.
#Problem
When using version Beta versions 3.700- 3.707 problems may be encountered
when using Windows 98. This is due to a severe bug in the 98 operating system
itself causing a memory leak.
The observed effects may include disappearing chart data,
loss of menus and a system crash
Note
The Euronav 3.708 CD software contains software to automatically detect windows
98 and to switch off the Windows 98 features that cause the problem. However
Windows may not report its version correctly and this tech note may apply to
versions 3.708 and above
#Solution
If you are using a version less than 3.708 you are advised to upgrade to latest version.
There is a possibility the operating system might
report an incorrect version number, or the above fix does not work.
If so you may download and run the following setup program that will setup up
the navigation to avoid the Windows 98 problem
Alternatively the fix can be applied manually:
To correct the problem the following can be altered in the
chart.ini file found in the main charting program folder
(for seaPro default is "c:\program files\euroanv\seapro2000")
Double click on the file and locate the entry GCARDBUG =
Set this a s follows
GCARDBUG = 0 Default - For automatic detection of Windows 98
GCARDBUG = 2 To prevent the use of the accelerated mode (for all operating systems inc 98 problem)
For the windows 98 problem set it to 2
Save the ini file and restart the charting program.
For Information
Mode 0 will give fastest performance under ME/2000/X
Mode 2 will give slowest performance and no memory leak under 98 - this mode is the same as used in previous versions.
